yet an other mishap

Today (13sep 2011) at 9.30pm , one train rammed inti another train which was standing on platform near chennai. We have seen accidents occuring while running, but now a days accident occuring while standing too. This is purely a manual error, the culprit to be punished immediately.
Indian railways is the oldest railways in the world but not showing it seniority in this. Every now and then we are seeing accidents.
If we are unable to cope with these slow trains, then how can we dream of bullet trains running in India.

Murali Krishna, evhub.in: assessing EV's progress in India

India could potentially be on the cusp of an EV boom, especially in the two-wheeler market. EV Update talks to Murali Krishna, founder of the leading EV web portal EVHUB.IN, about how the Indian market is shaping up.

murali_2.jpg

EV Update: In general, how is the market for EV looking? Is it still in its early stages?

Murali Krishna: Although the sales are growing consistently, the electric bike market in India is still in its early stages. Almost every company is importing e-bike parts in CKD (completely knocked down) format, then assembling and selling them in local markets. But some big brands are working towards indigenous projects for developing parts in India. EV business owners are optimistic about EV market and investing hugely.

EV Update: Who are the domestic leaders in Indian EV bike and car manufacturing?

Murali Krishna: REVA is the pioneer in electric car category. Tata and Mahindra are developing electric vehicles but not yet commercialised. There are some small players in this segment who are yet to prove their existence in this market. In terms of two-wheelers, there are more than 125 electric bike companies in India as of now. No one of them leads this segment yet. That said, big players like Hero electric, Yo bikes, BSA motors, Ampere vehicles, Ultra motors are investing hugely on R&D, product quality and after sales service to capture the market share. The company that gives that best after sales service will become the market leader.

EV Update: Is the focus entirely on EV bikes, or are EV cars getting a look in as well?

Murali Krishna: The EV bike business is definitely leading the way in India. Indian two-wheeler brands like Hero and TVS are already in this business and now Yamaha is planning to enter into the Indian e-two wheeler market as well. Low speed electric two wheelers are most popular in India as licences and registration are not mandatory, and two-wheelers provide a smooth and safe drive as well.

Though [Indian automaker] REVA has been in the EV car market for the last ten years, its production is mostly for export to European countries. Mahindra’s acquisition of REVA has emphasised the importance of electric vehicles. All Indian four-wheeler leaders like Tata, Mahindra are working in EV development for their existing models, such as the Nano and Maximo. As electric vehicles have a drive range constraint, Indian users are still not motivated to use EV four-wheelers. Heavier battery replacement costs also act as a disincentive for consumers. Comparatively, two-wheelers are doing well due to the affordable costs – especially since the introduction of a government subsidy.

EV Update: What incentives is the government offering? And are there other government plans to help stimulate the EV market?

Murali Krishna: The Indian Government is providing INR 95 Crores (INR 950 million, or $21 million) for battery-operated vehicles subsidy. It is also providing R&D support in electric vehicles as part of the 11th five-year plan. But government still needs to increase the contribution so that full-fledged R&D can be done and develop indigenous electric vehicles in India.

A 20 percent subsidy is given on the ex-factory price for electric vehicle manufacturers. This reduces the cost on each electric bike by around INR 4,000 ($89) and around INR 100,000 ($2,238) for electric cars. The government has committed to subsidise 20,000 units of low speed electric two-wheelers and another 10,000 units of high speed two-wheelers during this financial year. In 2011-12, the number is set to increase to 80,000 units for low speed bikes and 20,000 units for high speed e-bikes.

The incentives are applicable to all electric vehicle manufacturers that have registered with SMEV [Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles]. To register with SMEV, the manufacturer should have at least 30 percent indigenous content in their vehicles and should have significant retail and after sales operations.

EV Update: How would you describe consumer interest in India for EVs?

Murali Krishna: Despite frustration due to the fuel price hikes, consumers are not enthusiastic to buy an EV due to its low drive range, battery replacement cost and poor after sale service. This is because the parts are being imported and it adds to the cost and delivery time. Electric bike customers are mostly those who are fascinated by this new technology. As enthusiasts, they want to experiment.

EV Update: What are you predictions for the EV market over the next five years?

Murali Krishna: Over the next five years, India’s electric vehicle business will reflect the existing Chinese EV market. Currently there are more than 400,000 e-bikes on Indian roads, with a significant number being added every year. In coming years, we can expect many electric vehicle component manufacturers locally to support OEMs [Original Equipment Manufacturer], thereby reducing the product price and gaining better control over quality and lead time.

EV Update: Other than financial incentives, how could EV uptake in India be stimulated?

Murali Krishna: There are plenty of steps that could be taken. At an infrastructure level, electric bike lanes should be built to reduce interference with general traffic. Charging outlets should also be set up in shopping malls and market places, with credit card and smart card payments. Petrol based vehicles could also be banned from city centers.

From a research and development perspective, it is imperative to develop low-cost/high-performance battery technology, electric motors and other components locally. Also, vehicles should be developed for rural markets, which require extra mileage, weight carrying capacity and rough road reliability, among other factors.

In terms of government reforms, it would of course be helpful to increase the subsidies and incentives on various electric vehicle projects and products. The Government could also reform electric vehicle standards for Indian conditions by bringing all EV industry experts onto a single platform. Lastly, it would be good to introduce tax exemptions for imported components until the local market picks up.

Playing with Wordpress

Wow... I haven't even thought the web technologies have transformed into such an interactive applications. These days I was trying to develop some sub-portals for my electric vehicle portal i.e. http://www.evhub.in , while Googling I found the following Content management softwares (CMS) which can easily build a website for you with good interactive control panel.

Just wanted to share my experiences.

All we need is a website name, hosting with Mysql database option in it. We need to add a Mysql username to start with these softwares

1. Joomla
I have installed Joomla and tried to use but still not finding much out of it. I understand that it is not SEO friendly and a bit tough to learn.

2. Drupal
This CMS is good one, easy to install and SEO friendly. But, I still didn't find many plug-ins which I am looking for my electric vehicle event portal.

3. Wordpress
Wow ! this is awesome. I found the right one at last. Installing is easy, usage is easy and updating is simple. I found myself very comfortable with using this. I have take just an hour to complete my electric vehicle event portal http://www.evhub.in/events with all data to be uploaded is ready with me.

In addition, there are thousands of free themes, plugins and easy upgrading added its value.

Now, I can use wordpress for any my sub websites.

How is this business idea related electric vehicles?

The Business Idea

Electric vehicle end users feel embarrassed when their vehicle struck on middle of the road. The idea is to start a professional service base for electric vehicles in various cities where electric vehicles are growing rapidly. Customer can reach us via SMS, toll free call, email or in person. We give instant service for his vehicle and keep the customer spirits high. We plan to draft MOU with EV companies as exclusive service agent. We can rent EVs for nominal prices to reach lower middle class customers. This idea will give hope to EV industry by boosting its sales.

Congratulation to Egyptians

At last the tyranny of Mr. Hosni Mubarak ended in Egypt yesterday. He served as the President of Egypt since 1981 till now and most of the time the ruling like a military leader by curbing all basic rights of Egyptians. His entire ruling he kept country under emergency law.

For last 18 days, Thousands of people protested against his government and to his shame, he just wanted to transfer the powers to his deputy and keep the title as "The President" which shows his self centered nature. This decision has added fuel to the protests. Owing to the internal protests and international pressures, he at last resigned from this role.

In fact, this is success of Egyptians who fought together to get freedom from 30 year old tyranny

Search page for my portal

My portal http://www.evhub.in & http://www.evhub.biz is basically related business to business and information portal to share valuable information of various business contacts among each other and grow in their business. Other than that lot of technical articles being published on it. But some issues which I think the visitors are facing are
1. The websites are still not well organized despite the great content
2. Using two portals separately and promoting them which is diluting the brand.

Hence thought of making a page where whole information can be searched. I have used google custom search and search results in the same portal which helps the visitors be on my page.
I expect this move will really help the visitors to get one page contact of whole information they are looking for.

They can visit http://www.evhub.in/search and just type their keywords

Petrol hike giving a way for electric bikes in India

Public Sector Oil companies has increased the petrol prices by Rs.2.5 recently. Petrol prices has increased by Rs.10 in last 7 months which is nothing but 22% increase. This is a threat to our economy and automobile sectors. Interestingly this outcome has given a great opportunity for electric vehicle sector to stand and speak their advantages i.e. noiseless, smoke-free drive. Currently the total e-bike industry in India constitutes of less than 5% of automobile sector and looking for a positive market trend. No doubt this is an optimistic change for electric vehicle industry who are looking for a break in their slow moving business.

In addition, government has given subsidy to all electric vehicle manufacturers under SMEV (society of manufacturers of electric vehicles) and fueling its rise. This subsidy will be of Rs.4000-Rs.5000 for electric two wheelers and Rs. 1 lakh for electric cars.

Infact due to the recent hike in petrol charges, the per km cost usage for a petrol bike has risen more than a rupee now. Hence as this trend continues, the petrol will become dearer and per km usage will increase. On the other hand the per km cost of using sealed lead acid battery based electric bike is around 50 paise( including the battery replacement cost for 20,000 km). Hence electric bikes are competitive than its petrol counterparts.

If we foresee the future, electric bikes will be at their high volumes due to the rising trend of petrol world wide.

Registering a Partnership firm

While planning to register my online portal http://www.evhub.in in India, I got two options

1. Proprietorship: this mode of business doesn't need any registration.
2. Partnership: Hence to make the EVHUB operations legal, decided to go with partnership

Process of application which I have followed

1. Visit a Charted accountant/ Tax consultant in your city and discuss your business idea.

2. Decide who all can partner with you. Better plan to include your family members to reduce the risk.

3. Document and information required
a. Name of the firm
b. Name and permanent address of the partners
c. Firm address and letter of consent from the owner , preferably one of the partner should be the owner of the office space. This will reduce many formalities in applying for the registration.
d. Municipality house tax/ water tax document copy to be submitted along with the deed.
e. A partnership deed is drawn and the partner will be signing it along with witness.
f. 5 non-judiciary stamp papers worth Rs.100/- each used and a Rs.50/- stamp paper.

It costs less than Rs.1000/- for the formalities but need to pay the service charge to the CA office for application.

The process will take approximately a week for getting the registration.

Next a bank account to be taken for the firm for transactions. PAN number to be applied for the firm before operating any transactions.

Worst experience with Moserbaer portable DVD player

The very first look attracts people to buy it instantly. I am one among the unfortunate guys who bought it as it is portable, easy to use while travelling, easy handling. But I have not thought of its quality and reliability while buying. Believing Moserbaer's brand in CDs & DVDs, got tempted to buy for Rs.7000/- from a Mall in New Delhi.

It worked fine for first six months and the real problem started then. Some DVDs ceased to work with the DVD player and finally nothing worked. Spoke to the customer care and they visited my home for repair. The problem is the LED and it doesn't have the warranty and was to pay Rs.1000/- to service guys to get repaired.

It worked well for 3 more months and again the problem repeated. Really upset with the reliability of a product bought for Rs.7000/- which doesn't even run well for 9months. At last exchanged this for a compensation of Rs.500/- with a new DVD player.

I request you not to buy this DVD player and bog into troubles.

Career in Electrical machines

In this post we shall discuss about the career opportunities in electrical machines and company who hire motor designers.

Electrical machines is one of the specializations in electrical engineering. Most top institutes and universities provide Electric Drives/ Electric machines & Drives as specialization where students will pursue motor control and power electronics. By "Electric Machines" , I mean just electric machines, design aspects of various motors for various applications, expertise in various motor technologies. Due to the IT burst, people who are taking this course reduced drastically. Most Electric machine designers are veteran and current generation is not much involved in this career. We know electrical machines are everywhere and every application from domestic, automotive and industrial. Hence the man power requirement is unlimited but no one is actually working in this field. Hence in coming years " Motor designers" will have great importance around the world.

There are many motor technologies around the world and are as follows

1. Induction motors, DC motors, Synchronous motors are convectional motors and are for following applications
- Textile mills, industrial applications, Heavy electric vehicles, electric traction,
2. Brushless DC motors, synchronous motors are latest technologies and are for following applications
- Light and medium electric vehicles, small automotive motors, starter motors, servo applications, aerospace.

There is a great need of R&D to optimize the motor efficiency and increase the system efficiency. Hence people who understands motor are having great demand.
